David Riff (he/his, b. in the UK) is a writer, translator, artist, curator, and former member of the art group Chto Delat for which he also was co-editor of the newspaper of the same name from 2003 to 2008. He is senior curator at Austria's steirischer herbst Festival since 2018. Among other shows, Riff cocurated the 1st Ural Industrial Biennial in Yekaterinburg (2010, with Cosmin Costinas and Ekaterina Degot) and headed the first Bergen Assembly together with Degot (2013). Together with Dmitry Gutov he contributed to the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007 with the long-term project The Karl Marx School of the English Language. In 2009 Riff contributed to the 1st Former West Congress, organized by BAK in Utrecht. As an editor and author he contributed to the documenta 12 magazines, Flash Art, Moscow Art Magazine, Rethinking Marxism, Springerin, and Third Text, among others. As an artist-curator, Riff is working on an ongoing long-term research and translation project about the Soviet aesthetic philosopher Mikhail Lifshitz. In 2018, this resulted in a large-scale exhibition at Garage Museum for Contemporary Art, Moscow (with Dmitry Gutov).
